Poor handling after a service

uneven tyre wear is more prominent to how it affects handling if fitted to the front. My guess is that you had bad camber wear and/or flatspotting on the rear tyres. When they moved it to the front, it will veer left or right depending on how bad the camber wear ..and that skipping is probably a flat spot that's felt when weight shifts to the front during braking.

If all else is in order, tire pressure maybe a factor here. It definitely changes the way MX-5 behaves significantly.

Hi all,

A belated update here, since I've been on holidays:

I took the car to a tyre shop that I trust (a close mate of mine). His guys looked at it and immediately figured out what was wrong:

1) The tyres were rotated front to back - and the tyres had a bit more wear, that didn't help.
2) The tyre pressure was completely out of control. I'd clearly not checked this well, because it was around 50-55 PSI! Double where they should be!

I was driving on tiny strips of rubber, essentially, which is why the car didn't grip the road in any way. It also made the ride much worse.

Once sorted, the car handles like a dream again.

For future reference, listen to everyone when they say to check the tyre pressure, and check it again. Unfortunately, spinning wheels didn't do a great job of that this time (and neither did I in double-checking).

wow i was the first one to suggest pressure back on the 15th. and only sorted out recently. a 2 minute job to check. wow again. :lol:

Sorry, but you've mentioned that Spinning Wheels didn't do a great job - but clearly you haven't checked your tyre pressures, and once set correctly the car is handling "like a dream again". How could this mean that the guys at Spinning Wheels have done something wrong? They do wheel alignments, and as your car is handling so well now it would seem they did that well. I have never used them, don't know them, but I am not sure they would appreciate being blamed for somebody else's mistake.

those guys dont balance wheels also? i'm pretty sure that any place that does alignments, also does balancing. if unsure of proceedure to balance wheels. then i would understand why your are following your line of questioning.

in the end it doesn't matter. the OP said he has checked pressure multiple times since starting the thread. clearly not. he wasn't help himself out. it's a 2 minute job maximum. i khow he has been busy, but finding 2 minutes inside a 3 week period shouldn't cause anyone too many issues.
