Wheel locking clunk

Postby OMClarke » Wed May 20, 2009 7:46 pm

Hey guys, wondering if anyone has had the same problems and knows the answer?

I've got an NA 1.6, and when i turn it to full lock to do a three-pointer-turn, there is a horrendous clunk noise when it reaches full lock.
Now, the wheels don't seem to be rubbing against the body work, as there are no marks, and i don't think it's the CV joint (aren't they supposed to make a constant clunking noise when you move on full lock?). It feels as though the entire steering is working seriously hard to stick to the car. Any thoughts?

The MX-5 is not FWD and does not have front CV joints. Maybe your steering rack is loose/broken or you have a ball joint loose/broken or some other serious issue with the steering.

The wheels might not be rubbing against the body work, but could be touching either suspension components or "chassis rail" if larger than standard wheels are fitted.
Pain is temporary, quitting lasts forever.

Wheel locking clunk

My car used to make a horrible squeak on full lock. It turned out that the stone shield around the brake rotor had bent somehow and was rubbing on the lower control arm on full lock.

Well don't I look the fool! I know little to nothing about steering components of a car, so i herd my mate talking about CV joints and assumed that it was all cars.

I've got 15's on there now, but I've got a lame suspension set up (from previous owner) so I need to invest some cash into that soon. I'll check it all out when it's up on the hoist.

Cheers guys!

I can answer this one easily.

Wheel Bearing.

Hellmun had the same problem a couple of weeks ago at Wakefield.
Luckily Russell was there with a spare to whip off the old one and put on the newie.
