I used AirRoadExpress. Cost me about $80 for two wheels Sydney -> Melb. Book on the web, pay with Visa, no a/c required. Got here in one piece (well packed by bigdog, though.

Another option is Bus Freight. They operate out of our yard, see plenty of tyres and wheels passing through.
Don't know what the costs are, but the guys who work for them say they are very reasonable.
Goods usually travel under a Greyhound Coach, dpends on where it's going, trans continental I think gets packed on a pallet and shipped theat way.
