nb with hesitation under load
hey guys.
i have had a long standing issue with my car.
its a 98 nb1.
under a bit of load it has of a hesitation and stutter.
i replaced the coils so its not that.
i have heard of the cam angle sensor can be the issue.
any other ideas on what I could trouble shoot?

You've done lots of mods to your car so it could be anything (maybe even a poor connection somewhere).

I had a similar issue that turned out being the fuel pump.

I replaced mine with a walbro unit so it could be that.

Did you work this out? My car hesitates under part-throttle acceleration, just for a bit. I've taken it to Mania like a dozen times and we've replaced the plugs, leads, cam sensor and bit and bobs, they tell it seems to be fine, but nope... still there, pretty sure the only thing i haven't replaced is the 02 sensor.
It's been hardly dríven the last few years and almost not at all since covid. I'm thinking the car just has a grudge due to neglect, but the general shittiness makes for a vicious circle..

Hey just for the record, just in case someone somewhere went looking for the same issue...
I dealt with this low-rpm / low-speed bogging down and hesitation for ages and ages. Mania changed numerous things but it didn't really do anything much and i eventually just gave up on the car. I wasn't driving it much anyway and it being cranky just make it easier to ignore.
Anyway, had taken my daily (Clio 3) to my mech and was whinging about this and he had an idea it might be the MAF (since most of everything else had been swapped out by this time). We got a re-con MAF and put it in and the car was instantly happier. The gruffness in the engine went away and while there was still some hesitation 'twas marginal at best... i probably drove the car a couple of times after that.
Anyway, took the car for a fang yesterday and it was GONE... gone... completely gone. Engine sounded smooth, gutless as always but revved cleanly with no hesitation. We drove around to a few other places with a bit of traffic and a little start-stop and everything basically ran perfectly.
The car is up for rego (end-sept) so this is the time of the year i've gone "i should just sell the car"; i even called Mania and checked what a going rate would be... i was going to take it out yesterday (my birthday) for a goodbye fang, clean it up and put it up for sale but after the drive, i won't be in a hurry at all!!

A recon MAF!? What is there inside to recondition, I must have a look inside one of my spares ...
My money would be on the connector at this stage, pending what I discover inside.

I know.... maybe the little wire what hangs around got dirty or something... anyway, like you said, a great outcome... i might take it out again this evening just to check if it was a one-off... but even that's saying something. The last few years, every drive has been a chore so to look for a reason to drive it is pretty nice.

For science I sacrificed a much loved but surplus, AFM. Don't clap, throw money ...
Boy, was that hard to get open! What you see seems to be all there is to it. The metal plate was screwed down on top of the circuit board, seemed to be glued as well as it bent as I was getting it off. There is another metal plate below the circuit board which can be seen looking inside the sensor. No way was the circuit board moving without being destroyed in the process (yes I did take those two screws out before trying!).
Note the three solder blobs on the LHS, these seem to be the connections to the plug, which also didn't want to come out - maybe the connector wires were soldered in situ?
Nothing to fiddle with here that I can see. You may be right, it could have been something on the wire interfering with the air passing the wire and preventing it from getting a true reading.

Yes, possible. Also failed/failing component on the board.
Occam's razor suggests the simplest answer is the contaminated wire. But we'll never know.
