I know youre not supposed to scratch the crank.
with the enine in there is limited room.

Threre a various crank seal removal replacement kits around.
like this one.

now this one you neet to slide a piece of metal between the seal & the crank surface.
Woulnd't that scratch the crankshaft?

Ive read about drilling Pilot holes & puttining in screws ...screwdrivers with plastic or denim beneath them

what is considered the best methot to get the seal out without scratching the crank surface?

You cut around the inner lip being careful not to scratch crank and then you can carefully lever it out with a wrapped screwdriver or dental pick.
I use a dental pick with a piece of heat shrink over the tip.
Work around the seal gently so as not to damage crank or oil pump edge.

i think I used some seal puller from repco. did a horrible job - essentially I picked out the hard bit with the spring around the shaft first then the outside came away easier.

I couldn't get the screw system to pull off cleanly at all.

Ive seen that too & had a good look at it.

But it seems like it might want to scratch the crank? bit like the tool set I suggested above

I saw a guy use it on YouTube and it worked really well and without any damage (and my original post should have said ‘I am going to give this .....’:)

The difficulty depends on the seal there seems to be a wide tollerence between seals some come out easily, some don't. I usually carefully punch a hole through the face of the seal and lever it out with a simple ,shop made hook. A big socket if you have one makes a suitable punch to tap in the new one. Insure a good film of clean oil, the same as used in the engine on the lip before installation onto a perfectly clean journal
