Diagnostics?? Lumpy petrol after advancing ignition timing

Thought you might all enjoy this story to start your weekend.

So I did a diy 13 degree base timing advance on the NB8A today by taking off the accessory belts and slotting the timing wheel with a drill. Then putting it back together and timing with a light. Why 13 degrees and not 14? Because I was guessing how much material to drill away and how much adjustment I'd need, and didn't give myself enough, oh well.

Anyway, I was so eager to post Magpie's parcel before the post office shut that I jumped in the car and tore off for a spirited test drive of my imaginary extra 100nm midrange torque.

The car ran like sh*t. Idle was silky smooth but go near the throttle and it as lumpy and felt like it had a miss at half throttle!

Diagnostics?

Yes.

I got out at the lights, popped the bonnet, pulled my piece of wire out of the diagnostics box and then drove off into the hills laughing at myself.

For those who haven't checked your timing or adjusted idle on an NA/NB, there is a little diagnostics box that you join two jumpers together with a piece of wire to put the engine in the right mode.

So how about that. What an idiot.
Also, anyone know if I would have done any damage on my 3-5 minute drive at about 3/4 throttle? I didn't hear any knock.

Yep, the old forgot to unlock the timing trick.

A short drive won't have hurt it, unless you were hammering the throttle constantly.
