Went for a drive in my little white Mx the other day. Could not get 5th gear for a while...then i could. Any ideas as to why this may be happening? Thanks in advance. Simon

I've had that momentarily when doing quick changes on the track - my fault due to pulling lever too far/hard to the right when in neutral slot between 4 & 5

Hi,
Could it be low fluid?

Thanks guys for the response. Will check oil level in gear box.
I don't rush the box when changing so not sure if that is it.

Not sure what would just affect 5th, but some simple checks:

Clutch fluid level
Last time clutch fluid bled
Gearbox oil
Turret oil
Last time gearbox & turret oil was changed
Wear & tear of gear lever bushing
Upper & lower gear lever boots

And if the basics don't help, then take a look at what the big forum has to say on the subject:

Turret oil refers to the gear box turret oil, which in the MX5 5 speed GB is isolated from the GB oil in the GB. Turret oil is GB oil.

NB8A workshop manual says "gear change control case" (ie turret/gear lever housing) should have 80-95cc g/box oil in it.
Probably have to turn g/box upside down to check how much in there!! Can't see that affecting 5th gear only.
