Hi,
The time has come to fix the play in my gear shifter. I'm after some advice on where to purchase a complete kit with upper and lower boots and all bushings.
TIA,
Zac

I've always bought mine from here:
MX5parts UK. Good service, good prices depending on exchange rates and fast freight.

I had looked at the mx5 parts UK kit, it's a good price and freight is cheap, but it doesn't seem to include all the nylon bushing some of the other kits come with. I was thinking of going with the rspeed kit but there's 50$ freight to aus

The UK item is said to be genuine Mazda Parts - boots and a bush. You can check the price of these from Mazda Aust- adjust for freight. Others can comment whether this kit fixes "the play" in the existing set up. If a boot is torn you replace it- if it's not does it make any difference- perhaps the rubber has lost some elasticity? One thing that should be expected is that a genuine Mazda part is made to a spec. An aftermarket supplier r could make anything- good bad or indifferent.

And you don't pay UK VAT, gst which is In effect a 20% discount

I've had the centre console out and can confirm the boots are perished/non existent..
It does seem like the kit from mx5 parts UK is the best deal going around, however still unsure where to source the other bushings from that do not come with that kit, any advice on that front?
Cheers

Maybe give MX5parts the VIN and ask them to supply everything?

Zac, I bought one on eBay a few weeks back which included everything you need and it was OEM. It came from Japan. Let me know if you're still looking and I'll dig up the link.

This is the kit I used. They had 212 units but unfortunately currently sold out. Maybe email them to ask if they're getting more in soon... otherwise search around and I'm sure you'll find it elsewhere. Just make sure it's the full 8 piece kit.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MAZDA-MIATA- ... 1492965446My shifter had never been rebuilt so it was in a sorry state with no oil in the turret at all (evaporated) and a broken washer inside the turret. A couple of photos here:
http://headlightsgoup.com/2017/08/shifter-rebuild/So yes, I did feel a difference in my case. The shifter was visibly tighter and engaged with a much more satisfying action.
Often you'll find the boot is all torn so apart from shifting feel this kit will improve sound and smell insulation.

Instructions might not mention using Loctite on the three top bolts. Strongly recommended as any loosening of those three bolts will give you a floppy shifter again.

You got instructions? Is there such a thing for working on cars?

yes there is such a thing as instructions- its commonly known as a workshop manual and sometimes its enclosed in an old style piece of technology called a book. Rubber breaks down simply on the basis of old age. The NB Mazda workshop manual is actually a really good resource- written by engineers for mechanics - not sure if the same goes for NA.
