engine dimentions BP-4W
about to go on a road trip to QLD to pick up a 98 1.8 engine.
I gotta make sure it fits into the boot of the Honda civic I'm driving.
length Ive found without clutch attached is about 660mm that's from the back of the Coils to the front of the water fitting
height is just short of 600mm
I don't know what the weight is.... somewhere around 120 kg?
can anyone confirm that? Or know for sure otherwise?

I am not sure on weight but you can guarantee that it would exceed the theoretical ball weight of the vehicle if it had a tow ball - i.e. down force app 120 kg. That may cause a nose up situation and a lot of weight for stability. A box trailer - provided a car available with a towball would make it a long easier and safer- e.g. put it on a pallet and strap down.

120kg in the boot of a civic should be OK if you aren't loading the rest of the car up. A lot different to 120kg on a ball hanging out behind the car. Should be just behind the rear axel line and probably no worse then 3 x 6okg people in the back seat.

found this a while back mate where a guy was comparing our BP with a rover motor or something random.
"They both have the following accessories on them;
Intake manifold, fuel injection or carb, distributor, alternator, water pump, oil pan, valve covers, A/C compressor, plugs and wires, exhaust manifold, belts and starter. Neither engine has a power steering pump. Flywheel's are off, fluids are drained, engine mounts are off.
Now the Miata engine was leaning a bit on the scale, so I am going to weigh that one again and it will likely come up a few lbs, but someone may be able to say how close this is in their experience. The Olds/Rover weight is accurate. Both were measured with a wide range digital medical scale.
Miata 1.8L = 289 lbs."
thats about 130kg off my head, flywheel will add some but that was with starter so that should make up for it.

Not sure if this applies to the swap and im a little busy so i haven't looked properly but...
ok so you got my brain ticking over 289 pounds is 131kg.
but thats not what this is about, if you can get the NB starter motor you can fit it, it only use 2 bolts instead of three. the starter motor from the NB is "3.8 pounds lighter" (1.7KG) as weighed by kieth tanner of flyin miata, it is also a geared reduction starter so slower crank with more torque. im not sure if the weight reduction includes the 1 less bolt

I currently have a NB startter motor on the NA6...this will come with a starter motor most likely. The car is getting converted into an electric car.
and those who say a 1.8 conversion is cheapest HP......I'm not so sure.

I've carried an NA6 engine in the boot of my NB before.
The car did it, it just sat on the bump stops the whole trip.
I'd say yeah, 150kg ish sounds about right.
Civic will do it fine, it's the same as two adults in the back seat, or one fat bloke.

I put a complete BPT (which is heavier) in my 97 Astina boot once.

thanks chaps . not so much worried about the Weight affecting my driving. It is more about lifting it into the boot. and getting it out on the other side

Just make sure you have something to brace the engine in the boot. A 120kg engine will kill the plastics under the carpet.

Not a bad idea to pack it so it doesn't tip or cause any damage to the civic or just in case it still has some residual oil in it.
Plastic sheeting would probably help.

I've always just used an old tyre to support engines.
Sump tucks into he centre, the rubber spreads weight and helps absorb bumps.
As far as lifting it in, it's doable with a mate, but a hatchback is a bit awkward since you have to bend to get it in.
Bring a plank of wood to slide it on to get it in easier, and also some rope to help tie onto it to give you some handhelds to lift with.
