Cranking but won't spark

Postby hoodedreeper » Mon Oct 24, 2016 3:23 am

Hello,

I've got a '92 1.6 running a MP45 Supercharger. It recently stopped running, after changing the spark plugs, ignition leads, ignition coil, cam angle sensor and ignitor pack it still wouldn't run on all cylinders. Checked the injector pulse and found that injectors 2 and 4 were open. Opened up the ECU and found what looked like a driver had burnt out. So i changed the jumpers so it worked on Sequential firing and also moved the wire on the ECU harness.

It now won't run at all. I've done a spark test and each plug/lead sparks. I've also swapped back the CAS,aswell as moving the CAS to see if it changes. I've swapped the Fuel Inj relay too from my daily and still no change.

All the wires on the ECU and on the Coil/CAS look good,i've also cleaned up the earth next to the CAS. I could get it running before but now it cranks but it wont fire up.
Many Thanks

Chris

Sounds like you're running an aftermarket ECU - might prompt someone if you let us know what it is.

Given the above in an MS V2 ECU it might be useful to also ask in the MS owners thread:

Had exactly the same issue as you describe, however I'm running a different ecu. I also changed everything that I could think of and still nothing. Loaded a previous map which I kept from a couple of years ago and she fired up first go. It's happened a couple of times and I'm still yet to verify why it loses its map. I'm thinking it's a low battery issue. Have you let your car's battery drop in voltage recently?

The battery did go flat,i charged it up and we thought it had gone again. So i purchased a new battery but still no change.

Today's update...

New Spark Plugs fitted
Intercooler Pipes refitted

Tried jump starting it with a power pack and off another car and still nothing.

Also tried a stock ECU and still nothing

May be the timing belt has slipped & cam timing is now out?
Or is the car fitted with an immobiliser or kill switch that you know of?

My car is heavily modified and I'd doubt a stock ECU would run it. I charged the battery and changed plugs and more and nothing happened until I reloaded my previous tune into the ECU. So you didn't save a copy of your last tune? Does the tuner who tuned your car last have a copy saved on their computer they could send you?

Abit of an update

Received the ECU back with the injector driver replaced and i've reconnected the wire on the ECU loom.

Battery charged back up again and still nothing.

The car will spark in the test mode via Tuner Studio but it won't spark while cranking.

I've got a replacement engine sourced, will be getting the swapped at some point as i think the current engine is knackered anyway

Have you checked or swapped out your coil pack?
I don't see any point in swapping the motor until you can get this one to fire up.
Maybe you should get the car towed to someone?

Sounds like if you can identify what Tuner Studio test mode bypasses (when sparking), then you may have found the culprit.

My bad. I thought that he bench tested the ecu rather than in the car.

I'm only repeating what my friend said who has done everything tunerstudio related. The coil pack is off the daily driver,i can swap it back over again and give it a try

We're having to read between the lines a lot on this, so it's a bit difficult to tell where things are at exactly.
Clearly there was at least one issue with the ECU, which has been fixed, but was the ECU tested for other issues & fixed if any?
Additionally, while changing the following got the car running, but not on all cylinders, how certain are you of the serviceability of all the items, ie were they new or were they on a properly running car immediately prior to fitting to your car?
