When moving my car out of the garage this morning, I heard this strange sound when I hit friction point on my clutch pedal. I was in reverse gear at the time.
It's not one of my belts is it? It's seems too low in tone compared to the high pitched squeal I'm used to.
It sounded like it was coming from below the gear shifter, but it's hard to tell where the noise is really coming from within the cabin.
I also wasn't able to reproduce this sound on the way home from work.
Cheers, Wilson

Clutch thrust bearing (aka throw-out bearing) - may be even the clutch pilot bearing.

Thanks 93_Clubman,
Is this something that would cause more damage if I ignore it, or can I let it wear until I eventually have problems shifting gears?

Will probably be more noticeable when vehicle not at full operating temperature, so maybe less intrusive on longer runs. Over time the noise will probably increase & gear changes will probably not be as smooth/clean. So currently not urgent, but will need doing eventually, especially once gear changes become baulky.

Haven't watched the vid, but if its clutch bearing it will last for years while screeching.
How old is the clutch? If it's only recent I'd be checking that whoever did it used the new bearing that comes with the clutch (and didn't get lazy and reuse the old one)
If the clutch is old and starting to slip etc then you may as well wait until it's fried and replace the lot.

Sounds like the spigot bearing (mine sounded the same). Throw-out bearing will make the noise every time you push the clutch pedal down. Spigot bearing only works when there is a difference in rpm between input shaft and crankshaft. Either way the gearbox has to come off the replace them.
Andrew.

Thanks all for you input. It's been very helpful.
I've only owned the car for 20K kms out of the 200K its gone through, but going through all the service receipts there hasn't been any mention of a clutch replacement yet.
I'll hang out until the clutch or the gearshifting becomes unbearable for whatever reason and will replace everything then.
If it ends up not being the spigot bearing or thrust bearing in the future - I'll post a follow-up.
