Hi guys
I've bought an engine from 2000 MX5. Im told it is a 1.8
can some of you knowledgeable people answer the following
* Is it a 1.8?
* does it have VVT?
* power output?
* Would this be a good track engine, eg free reving?

Yes, no, and it'd be a servjcible track engine if it's healthy.

just under 100KM on it.
I know the Ks are not ideal

I'm building a budget clubman track car

It's a BP4W 1.8l engine from a 1998-2000 NB8A. It's not as powerful out of the box as a later VVT NB8B engine but it is very easy to modify as a track engine. It's a popular choice for track cars.

Just under 100k kms is pretty good going for a 16 year old engioldne. Plenty of laps left in it.
Do you mean an mx5 na8 clubman or a lotus 7 type clubman.

Free revving? anything can be made that way. but as standard? Prolly not as free revving as an NA6 engine. but if you are considering tracking it.....may as well make it free revving. But significantly more powerful than the 1.6 block.

Thank you StanTheMan and others for their response, it sounds like this engine will be a good fit for my purpose.

All the above.
I'd be doing he head gasket while it's out, since its easy, and who knows how long the previous owner had he engine running with the rad split.

Also check for bent pulleys etc on he front, not hard to replace, but annoying to track down just the pulleys without having to buy the alternator etc they're attached to.
Basically have a look and see if the impact caused anything to be pushed into the front of the engine e.
