ND transmission (notchy / oil change)

Postby Bronald » Thu Aug 25, 2016 2:30 pm

Hi all,

Done extensive research on helping solve an ever so light notch when shifting from 1st to 2nd.

Some people notice it, slightly like me, others have massive issues.

Over in America a few people have noticed the carbon syncros bed in and dirty the oil real fast, so a post break-in flush doesn't go astray.

Has anyone experienced anything like that here, or had an ND that they've changed fluids on?

As for oil, it seems MT-90 works well in the ND transmission for guys in the states (FYI ND gearbox is not an aisin unit like NB / NC)

Others have used the motor craft stuff which isn't available here.

Looking to change my soon (2,000KM)

The manual suggests mazda's OEM semi syn oil, or if not available, any other GL-4 75W90 is satisfactory!

Cheers all

I think you would have to do a back to back comparison with another ND to see if there is any difference?

Where are you located?

Mine doesn't feel as good a my old NA8 did with a short throw shift kit.

Mines a touch notchy 1st to 2nd when stone cold. As soon as its up to temp its as smooth as all other gears.
The reverse selection always feels gritty though...

Out of curiosity whats your build date and model?

1.5 roadster, July 2015 build.

It isn't super mega notchy, just sometimes first to second feels different to all other gears.

And that's sometimes. So it could be a "how I shift" issue.

Recently changed my gear oil on 2015 1.5 L ND mt for the first time at 39K. Good shifting beforehand, but due and worrying reports from the US. Now notchy into 2nd when cold. Have to 1-3 for the first 10 mins until it warms up. Nylon full syn and then added penrite 10/10th shift ease a week later. US pundits rated the Genuine Mazda gear oil as poor, but is this the answer? Comments?
