NA8 or NB8A: which manifold would you use?

Which is the better manifold? I can't decide which one to use. :? :? :?

The decision should really come down to which one is going to perform best in a motor being built for strong mid-range torque in a car that lives in the steep and winding roads between the South Coast, the Southern Tablelands and the Alps. Power is needed most from 3,000 to 5,000rpm. Specs include NB8B pistons, stock NB cams and lifters, mildly ported head, long 4-2-1 headers, tunable ECU, 91 fuel.

I'm setting up an NB8A head right now. It's pleading me to bolt a manifold on and throw it on the car. I have NA8 and NB8A manifolds sitting beside it on the bench, as well as an adaptor flange that lets me bolt the NA8 manifold direct to the NB8A head. I've had no luck finding an NB8B flat top manifold.

The NA8 manifold is in better shape and is much much easier to fit, despite some detail issues.

The NB8A manifold is rougher and is missing a couple of bits (NB fuel rail and VICS solenoid). I may also need to swap the ECU or at least install an RPM switch to activate VICS, assuming it's worth the effort.

Flat top -> Na8 -> nba / Vics

Why all that effort and still running 91?

Get one of NitroDann's. With a 2860 and a 3" exhaust attached.

Flat top -> NB8A -> NA8

So what is so magical about the flat top - other than it being a handy place to rest tools ... ?

Well then, it looks like it will be the NA8 manifold, which is good because it's easier anyway. There's a bit of a drought for flat tops these days. Thanks for the replies.

98 is easy if you live in the city or along one of the major highways. Out here in the southern boonies the supply of 98 is problematical. It's 20-40% dearer than 91, not many servos carry it, it's often stale or the tank's empty. Don't ask me about E85 either. It would take me more than a full tank to drive to the nearest E85 bowser and back home again. :lol:

Fair enough, I thought atleast 95 would have been reasonably available.

E85, yeah I can't be bothered and I live in the city!

From a quick look side by off motor a while ago, more free plenum volume.

would someone mind educating the uneducated?

Whats a flat top?

I'm picturing a Morris Minor with a wooden tray.

It's the ADM NB8B intake manifold - all the US racers want/used to want them.

You're not that far off the mark. Didn't the earliest Minors have a flat top motor? :D

The flat top has the been found to have the best flow from a stock manifold, then the NA8 then the NBA. The Vics did help oem torque but caused alot of turbulence that hurts power compared to the other two.
