NB valve cover sealant

When installing valve cover (with a new gasket), the Mazda manual says to use sealant just in the corners of the 'half moon' caps.
However, my Gregory's manual says to also apply sealant right around groove in the cover before pushing in gasket.
Have people found the groove sealant necessary?
Cheers

Just in the corners as per the manual.

Just the corners.
Covering the whole lot is only really for reusing gaskets, or for the old fashioned cork gaskets.
If you do it all around you'll hateyourself next time you need to change the gasket and spend an hour picking the rtv out.

It is up to you how you do it. I've seen some Mazda factory manuals state to do the whole way round like the Gregory's. And every 4 years they bring out a new manual and someone has changed the way of doing it. Corners at a minimum, the rest is up to you.
