ND ECU flashed anyone?
Have any ND owners flashed their ECU yet? I am interested in the options in the USA from Orange Virus, Dynotronics and Open Flash but would like to check if anyone has experiences with these products and their support in Australia.

Haven't heard of those options but don't ECUTEK in Sydney have an ECU flash available (or in the works)?

Re: ND ECU flashed anyone?
What a coincidence ..............I've been Hillclimbing my 1.5 Auto ND since September with some success ....won a Masters Games gold medal in my (2F up to 1600cc) class at Collingrove ,................. and only today posted up a similar request in another classification on this site today.
I'd like to buy a good effective chip , or have a reflash done if anyone can recommend someone ....., and I'm happy to travel Adelaide to Sydney or whatever to have it done.
Any help , anyone , please ??
Cheers Pete 0413 133233

Pete,
If you go to the miata.net ND forum and Power mods section and search on ECU you will get details on the flash mods I mention. All of the vendors will ship to Oz but I am unsure of how reliable remote support would be. Hence my question.

Re: ND ECU flashed anyone?
Thanks Roadrunner, ....yes they do for $1699 "for a 10% gain" . which is ok if there's nothing else available , but there's several others playing with the ND's , and I'm told by some that if I wait a couple of months , better options will be available

Re: ND ECU flashed anyone?
I pre-booked a dyno tune with MRT in sydney a few months ago but only got my ND last wednesday and wanted to do a few thousand kays before getting the tune. Will provide an update once the tune is done. Orange virus (ECUTEK tuner) in the USA are achieving about a 15Kw increase with a tune only.

CeramicND,
Look forward to seeing your update after Ecutek tune. I am interested in Orange Virus tune. He said he will provide the tune for USA $200 if I purchase the Ecutek hardware locally, which would be $495 from MRT. (Ecutek UK have informed me that I can get a tune from any of their global tuners providing I purchase the hardware from MRT). My concern is remote support from the USA, so I am waiting for a while until I see more feedback on OV's tunes.

Remote support from the states is awesome. With the nc reflashes, Joe from dynoronics or Mike from moto east have been great for the Aussies. Plenty of tweaks to the tunes to get them perfect, and emails usually replied overnight.
You'll have no trouble with remote tunes from overseas.

Thanks Regie for input. I was bit concerned as Orange Virus has been getting a fair bit of negative feedback on miata.net for his lack of responsiveness. Dynotronics did tell me he had many customers in Australia.

Re: ND ECU flashed anyone?
So I waited till I clocked 3000kms and in May got an ECU tune. Left the car for a week whilst I went on holidays. Picked the car up and wasn't really sure the butt dyno could detect a difference. The dyno print out said I had an extra 10kW at peak rpm with only a separation of the power and torque curves (compared to factory) from 5000rpm and above, below that mark the before and after curves were almost the same. There was a constant thought, 'can I feel a difference', whilst driving the car.
Anyways, ended up purchasing a Racing Beat sport race muffler from Deckspeed and they dynoed the car to see what effect the muffler had on the cars power. Of concern their dyno (same brand) indicated what appears to be factory standard power figures, doubt really starts to creep in at this moment. The muffler did add about 2-3kw at peak (can't feel it) and did add just a little more torque around the 2500-3500rpm area (I can feel that by the butt dyno) where most street driving gear changes are done. Loving the sound of the new muffler by the way.
So recently attended my first track day where another ND owner with similar mods (no tune) gives me a 3 lap demo of Wakefield showing me the right lines etc and says he can't feel any difference between his unECU'd car and mine. That was the last straw, I utilised my money back guarantee and returned my car to factory tune and again, can't feel any difference after 6000km of driving with the tune and around another 1000km since the factory tune was re-installed.
On a brighter note, the muffler is fantastic. I love the sound, the car now sounds like a sports car without being 'too load' or obnoxious and every time I drive the car I smile even more than before.

Re: ND ECU flashed anyone?
I suspect that one of the issues with US tunes is that they only get 2 ltr cars so for me and other 1.5 owners probably no go.However the well respected BBR in the UK have a kit with map and the hardware that costs 620 pounds posted and claims about 17% increase in power and abou 12% more torque, with a very even spread of gain across the full range.
You get a copy of the original map if you ever want to return it to stock and the hardware can be used as a diagnostic or returned(at your cost) for a 100 pound refund.
May be worth a try?
Peter.
ps.They also have arange of options for 2.0ltr ND's as well as NC's.

Unfortunately just because a dyno is the same brand doesn't mean it will give similar numbers to another. 10kW is within the variance of prevailing conditions and dyno calibration. Unfortunately tuning an already highly strung 1.5L NA engine will never give the big gains seen on some cars.
Good to hear you got your money back though, good to have the experience without losing any dosh!
