My rego paper says my 1996 MX5 engine is BP211951 but the actual engine in the car is BP711158. Obviously the original engine has been replaced and I will have to get that rectified on my rego papers. There is a big difference in the numbers. Are they basically the same engines? The replacement engine in the car needs a rebuild as compression is down in one cylinder. Is BP711158 still a NA8 engine?
I hope I'm not going over something that has already been discussed.
NA8 BP engine numbers.

Re: NA8 BP engine numbers.
In MX5s B6=NA6 1.6 & BP=NA8 1.8 etc
My 1993 NA8 engine # starts with 714xxx & is original.
From the numbers you've quoted, given the visual similarities in a difficult to see position & possibly poor lit place, I'd suggest the 7 was mistaken for a 2, the 1 & the 9 were transposed, & the 8 was mistaken for a 9.

Re: NA8 BP engine numbers.
They weren't consistently numbered sequentially over the years. My original '95 NA8 motor is BP922xxx. I agree with 93_Clubman. You've got the original engine but there have been some reading or transcription errors along the way.

Re: NA8 BP engine numbers.
So you're saying my engine number sounds consistent with a '96 MX5 NA8 and my rego sheet has the wrong number? I carefully checked the engine number on a cleaned surface with good lighting so I am sure the actual number on the engine in the car is correct.

Re: NA8 BP engine numbers.
Thanks for the information. At least when I rebuild the engine and order parts it will be the correct type BP NA8 engine.

Then engine number is only attached to the block. Any number of engine parts could've gone into making and newly rebuilt or replaced engine.
Surprizingly you are unaware of the different engine. Which means you brought it like that. And it it should have never had a owner change without the records altered at your department of transport.

That's what I was thinking.
I've been stung with that in the past and had to go to great lengths to correct the situation.
Didn't help that RMS had my engine number (engine that came with car when purchased) as being listed in another car!

Re: NA8 BP engine numbers.
I have a 96 NA8, with an engine no of BP22xxxx. I have read elsewhere in a UK forum that some early engines have high numbers as in BP9xxxx. Very odd sequences.
