Not too sure if this questions been asked before, but been thinking of ways to get more power into my 5. One idea i Got from a friend of mine is a SR20 (non-turbo) swap. Myself being a big silvia fan, the idea got me very excited. My main concern was whether this was legal in sydney and i'd be able to get it engineered? i also assume this would be a lot of work? as i wont be doing the work myself i will be getting my mech to work on it for me.

i have also been considering the BPT engine from the mazda familia or maybe just a plain 1.8 engine from a later model mx5. Not after crazy power since she's my daily or maybe even a supercharger?


any ideas would be welcome

Better off buying an already converted car. Cheaper in every regard. There's a few nice nb and an sr20 converted one. I guarantee it will cost 10k. I've put a bpt motor in mine from my Astina. It required 3p0 bucks worth of parts so not huge. Better off with a stock na8. Higher comp and all the bits are there. Again. Not cheap. I'm in qld so not sure on legalities.

The short answer is don't, the custom sump needed alone costs mega bucks. The sr20 isn't a particularly special engine for all that time and money.
It'd have to be engineered for it to be legal.

What model mx5 do you have?
If it's an NA the option of a VVT engine swap is more sensible, but why not just turbo your current engine if it's in good nic?

Bps are an average motor at best. The SR20 is also an average motor at best, but it has 150cc more capacity.

+1 for turboing your current setup, or getting a BP from a later model and chucking a turbo on it.
I've done just this and am making ~290hp atw, it is a built engine and will make more, but im still using the 5 speed gearbox.

Any engine swap will be pricey if you get a shop to do it.


Just get a turbo kit made for it and run it on low boost so you don't pour to much money into it and go from there.

You could take the BP motor out to 2.1 ltrs and turbo for less.

Since you're not after crazy power and it is your daily, I'd vote to supercharge or turbocharge.

Putting in a non turbo sr20 would be a waste of time, money and effort but saying that, it can be done for a price.

If it's a daily, I would go twin turbo LS motor.

The real question is have you been in a well built turbo MX5?

Even the stock engine setups I put together make near 200rwkw which is about the same as a current VF Clubby, except that the MX5 doesnt weight 1800kg.

The majority of young guys I take in a 200rwkw NA/NB chassis mx5 get uncomfortable very quickly, its not a 'ok this goes alriight ' experience. Its a "F*** me sideways, this thing honks!" kind of experience. Youd probably be very surprised.
