It's been increasingly hard to select a gear in my NA6, 1st and reverse especially, so changed the gearbox and diff oil, but that hasn't helped, any ideas

check clutch hydraulics especially the slave cylinder for normal operation, as the next step.
Then check gear selector cup and 'springs'.

Highly likely to be the clutch slave cylinder - they are a consumable - I've got approx 10 years each out of the first two on my 1993 NA8. Peel back the clutch slave cylinder rubber boot which its push rod resides in & you'll likely find it's damp.
If so replace & drain & replace clutch fluid. If not, you might find draining & replacing the clutch fluid improves operation if the fluid is old, & if only briefly while you wait for a new clutch slave cylinder to arrive, assuming new fluid doesn't fix it.

93_Clubman beat me to it, but nevertheless ....
As slomo said it's almost certainly clutch not releasing properly, most likely because there's not enough stroke from the slave cylinder. Look first for leaks from the clutch master (probably inside the cabin) and the slave. If it's not hydraulics then check that the slave and the clutch lever are properly mounted.
