Could be Viscous, could be a 1.8 diff.
Best option is to open it and have a look, a 7inch crown means a 1.8 diff, a 6inch is a 1.6 diff.
as to what kind of centre is in it, that's really hard to explain in words, best just post a pic.

Its an NA6 diff........ you can tell from the cast 4 ribs that are on the top of the diff centre and run between the pinion flange and the rear housing. Initially I would have said it was an NA/NB8 diff because to the stub axle flanges with straight edges but those 4 ribs are a dead give away for an NA6 diff.

thanks for the info guys. Someone local to me has it and he thinks it is a LSD. If it was a early torsen I'd be keen on buying it off him but from what ive read the vlsd is not a great diff.

If it's an NA6 diff it won't be a Torsen.
they were only available for the later 1.8 (NA8 and NB) diffs.
If it's an LSD it's most likely a Viscous, or maybe a clutch pack diff (I think Kaaz and Mazdaspeed did them)
