To oil or not to oil - 5 speed shifter turret

Postby tasna6 » Thu Feb 19, 2015 7:49 am

Hi Everyone, Recently picked up a na6 and loving it!

I checked out the shift boots and noticed that yay the boots are fine (look new) but there is no oil and only grease lubricating the shifter. My question is - does this matter?
I suspect not, as it might have a leak and not hold any oil.
The shift action feels ok to me (though this is the only mx5 I've dríven).
Thanks for your advice!

It is supposed to have oil. That's what mazda expected when they designed it - if you do something different you'd need to be aware of why. I'd put oil in it.

Yeah, factory workshop manual states 'oil' for turret - manga_blue posted a page from it on here a while back on another GB issue, & the page clearly stated oil.

Cheers everyone, I'll give it a splash when I change the gearbox oil and monitor the levels.

check how much oil drains from your gear box.
if more oil drains out than should be in there you can deduce the turrent oil has leaked into the gearbox

i dont know how much oil is suppose to be in the turrent...maybe not enough to measure if it has leaked into the gearbox?

Yes there should be oil in there, but the seals may be worn hence the grease as a substitute. It volume of oil is small, perhaps 50ml from memory. Mine ised to leak and drain completely in a few days of driving so i used special molybdenum grrase. My experience says it worked well keeping a great feel to the shift action.

No wonder couldn't find it - It was MrRevhead not manga_blue that posted the page:
