It'll bolt straight in, even using the NB ECU if you change some of the sensors, but why would you? The NB engine makes more power, has better economy, has a broader power spread and doesn't have HLAs.

You probably can't register the older engine in a newer car either.

I currently have an na8 and the engine is still running strong but the cars paint isn't great and it's rusting. The interior isn't great either, it has a lot of cracked or missing parts.
I've got an opportunity to buy an nb8a with great paint and interior. But the engine has issues and is probably at the end of it's life.

sell the na8 engine for $1000. buy a nb8 engine for $1000. done. na8 engine complete are quite rare, were nb8 engines are not rare. you might end up with some change in the process also.

But then he is stuck with a rusty car with shitty interior that has no engine.
Clean up the NA and sell it whole or part it out. Price up what it will cost to buy your mates NB + the engine and factor in time and effort.
Then compare that to buying a good NB that doesn't need work.
Best of luck!
