Randall style air intake on NA6?

Hello
I've been researching these cold air intake mods and they all look fine and what not. The Randall style looks to give the best bang for buck.
But i was curious if it would pass a road worthy with a hole drilled in the fire wall? Or if any modification to the airbox at all would make it fail?
I only ask as im upgrading my exhaust soon and was wanting to upgrade the airbox in order to compliment it. Just wanted to know how road worthy i can keep it in that regard?

The filter/box shouldnt be an issue for RWC. Technically if it's an oiled filter it's not legal, but nobody really checks or cares.
As for the firewall hole, Technically it should fail with one, because it's "modified a structural compnent" the theory according to Vicroads being that if there's a fire in the engine the hole can let heat/smoke into the cabin.
But, once again, they often pass because nobody really checks or cares.

Based on the photo in your original post that is a later version of a 'Loch Stewart' type of intake.
The Randall type is used on left hand drive Miata/MX-5s as the brake master cylinder gets in the way.
Have had the original Loch Stewart intake on my first NA6 I highly recommend it..... It sounds like the intake is in the cabin with you at WOT

If you like noise, go for it.
Maybe find someone that has one fitted and go for a drive with them.
Car parks are cool at first but if you are serious I'd recommend going on a long stretch up hill so the car is under load in third, fourth and fifth. If you can put up with the drone in the higher gears, you will be fine

I have one like in the OP's photo on my NA (Mine is from MX5 Mania I think, it came with the car). It does not make a particularly obtrusive noise under load, I rather like the sound :-)

Tim

I had one for a while.
sounds was ok, but got annoying most days, and took a lot more upkeep than the OEM airbox.
The noise was loud
The glovebox rattled like crazy
getting to the air filter was fiddly and annoying
Cleaning the filter took ages since you had to dry it afterwards
you had to clean the filter every month because the cowl position would cause leaves to pack the filter.
Basically, the noise was great 10% of the time, and the thing annoyed me the remaining 90% of the time.
Stock airbox is better for me, but I;ll be making another CAI in future, just positioned differently.
Probably wont happen for a while though, since I'm busy building a bike.

I am currently running a Loch Stewart intake on my NA6 and Love it.
The sound is glorious, I don't find it annoying in fact I haven turned the radio on since it was installed.
I am running a genuine Mazda panel filter in it and could not be happier.

These ones are 100x better than the Mania ones.
Mainly in that cleaning is as simple as open the clips, knock the filter a few times (or replace), clip back and done.
The mania one is, undo some screws
lose them instantly
remove pod filter
knock out leaves
spray filter with cleaner stuff
rinse filter
leave to dry for hours
spray with oil
leave to dry
put filter back
curse where the little screws went

This is much better! OEM panel filter FTW.
