What's with the 1.6 exhaust manifold gasket?

I have a single exhaust manifold gasket (1.6) on my car. When I checked with Mazda they indicated that I should have two (one insulated with asbestos) but can only supply one. My car has run for at least 50000 ks with one (something sandwiched between outer layers of perforated silver).
I presume the option of two is an older setup although Racing Beat like Mazda sell the two gaskets. Anyone got any ideas which is the best to use?

I've got a few laying around, and they are all composite gaskets - meaning they are several bound together at a single point. I've not actually seen totally separate gaskets that you buy independently - that does seem odd and not what I've seen before on the cars (I've got two NA6s and rebuilt both engines). The spare 1.6 exhaust gaskets I've got came from head rebuilt kits that included intake and exhaust gaskets.
Might be worth calling MX5Mania and asking them what is normal.

just get the normal metal one. if you wanna find the old asbestos one, go ahead. but their is a reason asbestos isn't used in car parts these days.

You're probably right although it's Mazda who have the asbestos one for sale...

Really?! Didn't think you could get asbestos in anything these days. Not brake pads or fibro. Since its illegal for James hardie to sell, would assume same for Mazda.
