probably sounds like a silly question, but is there an easy way of removing and replacing the oil filter without also removing most of the skin off my hand

Remove the things digging into your hand before you attempt to remove the filter if your arm cant physically fit in the gap.

I remove the front right wheel last time I change mine. Worked well for me.

Use the smaller Z436 oil filter.

I have large forearms and have no problems reaching and removing the oil filter on my NA6 (even with the larger Z79A - although, it is more tight).

Remember to lube the seal with some oil prior to reapplication and also don't tighten it too tight. Just enough that it is tight/'grips', then 1/4 turn more.

Weirdly, I have no particular problem with this on my NA. I have thing (read wimpy) arms. The one I hate is our Subaru Forester, where it is under the block nestled amongst the exhaust manifold.

Have you tried removing the bracket under the intake manifold to the block? I found that gave me more room.

Kev, isn't that bracket harder to get to than the oil filter?

I found it quite easy, but maybe helped by my skinny arms. Short extension on the socket. I did it from the top. Just have to feel around a bit to locate to get the socket on. First time I changed the filter on my NA I wasted money on three different removal tools before resorting to the old screwdriver through the filter method ....

I just go from the top with a super cheap removal tool.
Hardest part is feeding the tool in.
The bit I hate is when the oil drips down the block.
Thinking of making a drip lip to prevent this but too many other priorities to bother just yet.

just purchase one of those $15 mazda oil filter removal cups if you cant wriggle your arm in

i still have 2 billet aluminum socket tools that where never picked up or paid.
they fit onto the end of the filter and you can use 1/2 drive or use 26mm hex i milled on the end...maybe someone who got one off me can give feed back?
same thing as above post but made from solid billet and polished for the same price
works good for me

Yeah, I had the car jacked up and removed it from underneath/through the wheel well without the wheel off last time.

Took time, but no injuries.
