Currently I have an xforce cat back which came with my mx5 when I purchased it.
However its too loud for my liking and its starting to bug me.
Should I change the whole system? or should I just change the muffer?

Is it loud or droney?
You could change the muffler or add a resonator or both.
Personally I'd keep the extractors

recommendation for your car - it would probably help to know what model and what geographical location. One might recommend that you speak to Town and Country in Geelong up to and including NB

There's no need to change the whole system unless you want to upgrade it for other reasons. That said, if you haven't already, it's probably a good time to consider what your plan for the car is. For example, do you want to modify it or keep it standard? If wanting to modify eventually, do you want simple mods or more complex ones? All I'm suggesting is to think/plan ahead a little now given that you want to quieten the exhaust, as it might save you changing the exhaust again in the future.
Anyhow, if you want something really quiet, get a good used factory cat back that someone has replaced with an aftermarket cat back - cheap, simple, & should be plenty sitting in forumite garages. Then you can take your time thinking about what you want to do to the car, if anything.
Btw, does your NA8 have any other changes like a cold air intake that might be adding to loudness?

ring Town and Country in Geelong- their system ( cat back) works well and pricing is competitive. You will get a bit more performance and a sporting note and no annoying drone Routine is take the car down get and get it back the same day, PCMX5 ( Peter) on the forum is full bottle on this

Adding a turbo helps reduce noise a bit.
But i would probably just get a resonator put somewhere in the line.
