New mx5 owner & found an interesting Penrite Oil?

Hi All!

Just took ownership of a '98 NB8A classic red mx5, and just posting to say a hello to everyone, and to perhaps spur some chat on some oil I picked up from SuperCheap (I'm from AU).

I actually walked in to grab some Penrite HPR10, but spotted this on the way out - it was a 6L bottle of Penrite 10W-40 Full Synth.

It was the same price as the HPR10, but came with an extra 1L, so its technically 20% cheaper, and apparently 'full synth'/

The Aussie Penrite website only recommends the HPR10 and semi-synth 10W-40 for the mx5 - so I'm not sure if this is a new product, or some grey market import through Supercheap. I'm cheap enough to give it a shot (and I don't really plan on doing any track days).

Anyway, back to the introduction:
Thanks for all the great info guys!
This forum & its members have certainly made life a lot easier to handle with the bright red go kart I have now.

Cheers,
Wilson

If you can afford, get redline. They are really good. Specially to the gearbox.

Unfortunately a bunch of big shot oil company lawyers redefined the term "full synthetic" a number of years ago, so many oils labelled as fully synthetic on the market are not synthetics at all, or are a synthetic blend. These are still high performance oils but mostly consist of highly refined crude.

Properly synthetic motor oils use Group IV (PAO) base oil and are created in a lab, not a refinery. Penrite's range of oils in this category have "PAO Ester" printed on the front of the bottles.

Having said that, the MX5 engine doesn't require any fancy oils and many have run 250-300,000+ kms on mineral oil with minimal internal engine wear - the key is strict oil change intervals.

Welcome! :NB8A:

I brought that oil recently for my Ford Escape.

Penrite HPR5 5W-40 goes in my B series engines.

Was using HPR5 for both, but was getting too expensive.
