The alloy gearknob on my SE got up to body temp today on a 50k drive in mid-20 degree outside temps and drĂven at no more than 100kmph and no more than 3,000 revs.
Is this normal?

I used to have a metal gear knob on my car as well, and didn't like it - too hot in summer, too cold in winter...so I switched to a teflon Works Engineering knob available from MX5 Mania (shameless plug
)

Sounds like mine is normal then. I need gloves in winter and it needs a glove in summer.

Ive got a machined ss knob and it used to get to like 35-40 degrees on drives down to the coast. Replacing the shift boots made a big difference, I'd check this out.

Yes they do get hot in summer when the car's been sitting in the sun with the top down.
- 'tis a test of your worthiness to drive the car, much like the Shaolin monks who must brand their forearms on a scalding cauldron to prove that they have become a Shaolin Master!

I have a machined Momo one on my NA that the previous owner bought at vast expense. I have put a piece of plastic tube over the shaft and then put the knob over that - it both gives a better fit and insulates it a bit. It still gets warm though.

My plastic NB8A gear knob was getting VERY hot, so I replaced the shift boots, problem solved. Those rubber things make a huge difference.

Intact boots certainly reduce the noise and heat getting into the cabin but don't stop heat being transmitted into a metal gearknob from the lever.
I might try the sleeve mentioned in one of the posts. Any more details?

Thanks, but still a lot of snagging to be done before it's a useable car again
