Car starts but won't rev past 1500 (NB8B)

Postby ntranced » Mon Feb 24, 2014 12:19 am

Hi guys,

Stumped on this one and hoping someone can shed some light. Did a timing belt change (and installed the 5x racing adjustable timing wheel) recently and the car was running bit sluggish, opened her up and found that the intake gear was off by 1 tooth (as well as the timing wheel installed retarding timing a bit).

Today fixed all the issues above, when we started her up, all seemed fine. However upon revving the engine, it just refuses to go past 1500 rpm, like fuel was being cut. Really rough revving and noticed the . Checked all electrical connections and it seemed okay.

Any ideas on what it could be or what to try? I've uploaded a video of the engine running:

Sure the AFM is plugged in properly?
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Yep, we've re-plugged it multiple times, haven't had an issue in the past, so I would find it really odd if the AFM had just suddenly died.

Sequence of events of the whole ordeal
  • Replace timing belt, water pump, pulleys, seals, etc.
  • Swap crank trigger wheel with 5x racing adjustable timing wheel
  • Drive car, notice it's down on power and hesitant on throttle
  • Check timing, notice the wheel has slipped on installation and had retarded timing about 3 degrees, adjust it back to 10 degrees BTDC
  • Drive car, notice it's still hesitant
  • Pulled cam covers and timing belt covers, discover intake cam was off by 1 tooth
  • Tried to adjust in a half arsed manner
  • Also adjusted wheel to ~14 BTDC
  • Car doesn't start, no or 1 spark
  • Reseat all connections, tried timing wheel at 10 BTDC and also slightly retarded, no go.
  • Discover crank had moved, pulled everything apart and lined it all up and re-did the belt.
  • Car was hesitant to start, but foot down on gas and it fired up fine. All seemed good, car revved.
  • Noticed a clicking sound from the engine bay, took off accessory belts and discovered it was the trigger wheel nipping the crank sensor, moved it outwards and started her up, seemed to be occasionally misfire.
  • Adjusted the crank sensor a bit closer, but no difference.
  • Put on the accessory belts, etc. and fired her up, no more misfires but we're at the current problem of the car idling okay, but refusing to rev.

Figured this one out. Seemed to be a combination of the 5X racing timing wheel and the gapping of the Crank Position Sensor. Have put the stock trigger wheel on for now until I've got time to investigate later :)
