Can a NA 1.8 waterpump be used on a 1.6?

My capacity to bugger things up knows few bounds. Almost a year ago I did a big order with MX5 parts for cam belt and seal changes. (I don't rush into these things!) Now at the point of having stripped everything down and going to fit the new water pump I see I ordered the 1.8 instead of the 1.6 - my mistake, not theirs. As it is the UK I'm not going to send it back etc. Looking at the 2 pumps it seems to me the only difference is the 1.8 has a flange for a bolt at the left side. On the 1.6 this fouls the alternator bracket. Would there be a problem that anyone can see if I cut that flange off?
Thanks again for the invaluable advice this forum provides.
Tim

Is answering your own question one of the signes of maddness?
Having done a bit of a search I think the answer is yes. (See for example :
http://www.solomiata.com/Mx5Engine.html). I will have to remove teh flange (lug/whatever). Before I do the cutting I will reove the laternaor bracket just to make sure it all fits OK, but I think it will be fine.

NO NO NO I hope you had a beer and thought about what you are going to do
I a belive that the 1.8 and 1 .6 pump have different threads in them IE for the tensioner and the idler
PLease Check before Cutting
I hope im not too late

No worries - no cutting yet
the lure of beer and a sudden compulsion to polish the cambox took over. If I have learnt one thing in life it is not to make major decisions at the end of the day!
Your call about the threads is spot on - in fact there is no thread for the tensioner in the 1.8.
So, anyone want to buy an unused 1.8 water pump as sold to me by MX5 Parts for thirty six pounds?
Thanks again,
Tim

An update - not that is is of any significance to anyone but me. I amost started a new thread titled "Am I cursed?" but didn't.
Realising a I needed a 1.6 water pump and not having time early this week to get one (and the cam seals I realised I had also forgotten to order) on last Saturday I ordered the pump and seals from Australian suppliers who - relying on Australia Post - said they could deliver by Wednesday this week. Being out of the house at SCUBA course the AP courier left cards saying the items were available to be picked up at the local post office - except they weren't, along with many other parces in the area. Something has gon SNAFU with the contractor, nothing has been left at the PO. I just spent 20 minutes on the phone with AP who could tell me the parcels have been returned to the distribution centre for unknown reasons. They said to call them if I had heard nothing in ten days!! (To be fair, AP is not a courier with guaranteed delivery dates). I explained that I need the parts to get my car on the road, and I go back to work after Australia Day. Again, not especially their problem, but a big pain for me.
Before this charade began I had decided to replace the starter while I had everything out, and went to a parts place I have used for more than 30 years. They didn't have one in but couldget it from another store. I explained I'd be unable to pick it up until after the SCUBA course - that was fine. So, this morning I go to pick it up and guess what...
I have clearly done something terrible to the parts god in a former life.
