NB8B Intake Modification - Removing the 'resonators'

Hi guys, I am wondering if it is safe to remove the 'resonators' on the NB8B intake as shown below. If so, what should I use to cover the holes cut once they are removed? I know this probably won't give me any performance improvements, but I do want to hear some induction noise as I am finding the mx-5 is a little quiet. I would go for an aftermarket intake, but I'd like to keep the engine bay looking completely stock as I am a P plater in Victoria (I've had my fair share of hassle from the cops with my previous cars). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Alex

Hi Alex,

I have read (I think it was the solomiata.com site) that removing the resonance chamber results in a torque dip. Just something to consider before the modification.

Cheers

Keep them, add a "Mania" style firewall intake, increases induction noise quite a lot, and if you paint it black it looks very factory.

Can't do a firewall intake on a NB8B as the ABS system is in the way.

Too quiet? Leave the intake alone. Do the exhaust!

The attachment on the airbox snorkel is a sound surpressor, but the Helmholtz resonator on the across engine intake pipe is supposed to flaten an otherwise dip in mid range torque. Someone on here did a dyno before & after & I think found the torque dip didn't return with the resonator removed, but it was not as good at higher RPM from memory. So if anything, remove the attachment on the snorkel, but leave the resonator on the cross pipe.

Thanks for the info guys, great stuff. I ended up just removing the entire snorkel since it's only held onto the chassis with a single bolt. There is a bit of increase in induction noise and no noticeable performance gain. I may have to look into a full exhaust system soon :D
