Hi, I recently bought my first MX5, a 1998 NB, I am currently in the process of replacing all the oils etc. in the car and hoping someone can answer a question for me. Do all NB's come with a lsd? if not how do I tell if my car is fitted with one.

As far as I know most nb except SE came with out a LSD in Aus. JDM units got the LSD I think?

As above, most NB's have an open diff, with the exception of the JDM model, SE and the 10AE.

A simple test to check if your car has a LSD installed is to jack it up, rotate the wheel on one side forward, check that the wheel on the other side is spinning in the same direction. If so, you have a LSD. If the opposite wheel is spinning the opposite way to what you are rotating the other wheel, you have an open diff.

The one I took from my car certainly was.


any NB with a Mazda Factory diff will have a Torsen anyway, which uses the same oil as the open diff (no fancy LSD stuff needed because it's gear operated, not friction)

Does this still work with a Torsen rather then a clutch pack? By definition a Torsen is only limited slip when there is a torque difference between the two wheels. That is why they act like an open diff if the car lifts a wheel mid corner.

This never ever works with any factory mx5.

It is wrong, the very best way is to do a few donuts in a row in the dry.

Honest to god no troll, it takes 5 seconds and its a 100% no failure, proof.

Yep a Torsen is a torque multiplier so lifting one wheel up will cause it to act like an open one.

So if I wanted to get an LSD diff on the cheap where/what car would I get one from?

(To suit 1999 BP/6psp/turbo conversion)

What sort of diff ratio would I need to have longer gears behind a 5sp BP.

The 3.6 from the open diffed 6 speed cars, or rarer 3.9 LSD from the 10 As would give you longer legs then the standard 4.1. LSD center will match any 7 inch diff. Miata roadster was doing a group run of a 3.3:1 set, but obviously that will be a bit more expensive then a used set.

Cheers mate, just needed an ideal ratio as I will be running a hilux diff, I will just hunt around and find a hilux diff in similar ratios :-)

I can offer you a complete lsd with poly bushes. Don't know the ratio though. Probs whatever was standard for an NB8A or B.
