Stalling once warmed up
So as the title suggest my mx seems to stall when the clutch is in, usually is most common when slowing down at the lights. it only really happens once the car is warmed up, i've heard it might be something to do with the choke and raising a float when the water heats up in the vein airflow meter? and while we're fixing something should i upgrade? i hear people put RX-7 airflow meters in MX-5's to make them more efficient? would that be the way to go or just pick up a replacement to see if it's good? or clean it out?
also a ticking noise directly related to the speed of the engine.. is that something to worry about? the car has rarely been used until about a month ago, since then has been used "spiritedly" to say it in a nice way..

Woah, hell no.
and while we're fixing something should i upgrade?
I doubt you will be able to do both at once.

Definitely not, there are oldschool tinkerers like magnablue who play with all sorts of stuff including different afms but not for efficiency and you need a thorough understanding of the whole process before you even start.

It cannot be cleaned, id try a replacement but it could be many things, like a gummed up idle control valve.

If its very quiet distinct sharp tick its th einjectors which is normal, if its a louder thrashy tick its the lifters, google 'miata hla'

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Re: Stalling once warmed up
Just to clarify for the OP.
It won't be anything to do with a choke, or float.
Those only relate to carbys, not fuel injection.
And even if it was carby fed you shouldn't need to use the choke at all outside of the first start on a cold morning.

Re: Stalling once warmed up
On carbies, hesitation and revs dropping when you step on the clutch can mean your mixture is too lean, amongst other things.
I'd check it's getting the right mixture of fuel and air.
But yes, as HKS said. It certainly won't be choke or float related.
... unless you've installed carbies...

Re: Stalling once warmed up
Thank you everyone who responded, i tried this method and my idle speed was at about 450-500 i'm guessing when it got this slow it just wanted to kill itself, literally (puns everywhere..) about to go for a test drive and will report back
also if i want to ask more questions under this engines, trans and final drive section should i post new or rename this thread? am new and don't want to annoy people straight up haha

Post a new thread for each new topic.
If there are multiple questions about a similar thing then include them all in one topic.
The main thing is to quickly search the forums before asking, your question may have been asked before and got an answer in the past.
If that turns up nothing, just say "I've searched and couldn;t find an answer, how do I X?"
People here don't tend to get annoyed at people with questions, but they can get annoyed when the same question is asked 100 times (btw, DON'T make a new thread asking about what oil or what tyres. Somebody asks that question about once a month, and it always gets the same asnwers)

Re: Stalling once warmed up
This might get confusing with ticking sound and stalling topics happening at once
in relation to the stalling - the "stalling problem" I'd say is fixed but now on every so often the rev's dip to 250-300, as stated in a previous post i just raised the mechanical idle by turning the screw on the throttle body until it was at ~900 rpm the same as the ECU idle
could this be A/F Ratio? what's your suggestions?

Set idle as per:
http://www.miata.net/garage/KnowYourCar/S7_Idle.html
It sounds like you might have improvised after you found it still dipped occasionally after adjusting as per the Miata.net Garage article. If so, this might just compound the issue with occasional high idle. I'd suggest checking the clutch pedal switch as per discussion here:

Re: Stalling once warmed up
Trap for new players if you are going to reset the base idle. Ensure your fan control is set to zero as the ecu will compensate if its not.
If the engine cooling fans engage remember that will have an impact as well.
Having said all that I have had a massive improvement. The car no longer feels like it wants to stall.
