ok so I have been looking into how much fuel my mx5 has been using and am a little shocked at what my car is using and want to know if its normal... I get about 450k's to a tank... ok so it has about a 47L tank... I don't run it dry but its on the red when I hit the 450 mark... my normal run is 120k's a day mostly spent in 80/90 zones.... so im looking at about 10L/100k's.... my vz commo gets better K's than that... now I know the mazda is using tech that is over 23 years old but it still seems like alot of fuel for a little motor... what u guys think?

Depends on how you drive it - I have had under 6 l/100 on an economy run, but used 20 l/100 on the track. but on a normal run about 10 l/100.

Don't look at the gauge and the odometer, do it properly

1. Set the odometer tripmeter to '000' when you fill
2. Next fill note the tripmeter = 475
3. Take the litres to fill - eg: 37.5
4. Divide 37.5 by 4.75
5. Result: 7.89L/100km

I have an '89 NA and it averages around 7.5L/100km all the time, regardless of city, highway or mountains. It has been as low as 7.1 and rarely over 8.0

Yesterday I took mine into Brisbane CBD, did around 40km in the city and then back home, coffee run this morning mostly 100kph zones and now 210km and gauge just below 3/4 full

I record all fuel consumptions on all my cars - 2000 NB8A is albeit similar to the NA

I used the method of calculation provided by zero00 on my original low km (i.e. genuine 33 000km) NA6 and got 7.29L/100km. That was mostly highway km at the speed limit but included some city driving. I hope that helps.

...but your vz commo has a bigger tank... bigger tank = further distance
I get about 490 km to a tank and I refill with around 38-39 litres in my nb8b so again not dry but that's good kms for a small tank and your NA has a smaller tank.

for an NA6 your economy sounds a bit low, but what we'd need to know - your 80-90 zones - are you travelling in a hilly area? is there an amount of traffic that moves at various speeds? Or is this all flat road with open free flowing traffic?

are you typically one to accelerate through corners and be a bit heavier on the pedal?
or are you driving lightly and trying to make your tank last through the week?

I would have expected an NA6 in good condition to be returning consumption figures of 7-8L/100 for combined 80% near highway speeds and 20% built up traffic.
That said, if you're aggressive on the pedal in traffic areas, that can really dent in the total average consumption.
Choice of fuel would be the first option to alter. 95/E10 vs 91 has always returned better for me.

doing an exclusive highway test, ie, filling up, then travelling at highway speeds for your normal distance, then filling up again will show the economy for highway speeds.
"City" cycle economy is usually 20% worse, and if you're constantly aggressive on the accelerator, it can be up to 35% worse then your highway average.

If you're reasonable careful on the pedal, and your economy is still poor, the usual culprits are (in no particular order): constant use of air con, dirty air filter, ECU temp sensor being a bit crudded up, O2 sensor old, etc.. all the way to bad ignition timing, extremely poor condition spark plugs, too heavy engine oil, blocked injectors, poor fuel, old diff and gearbox oil (3-5 years old+ will make a difference) etc etc..

I am lucky to get 350kms to a full tank of 98ron, but I have a super heavy foot.

I average 11.3L/100km which i don't any good and on the tanks which i go up nebo on i seem to get better fuel economy then the tanks that i keep it below 4k rpm
