Leaking Thermostat housing

The 'T' pipe coming of the lower thermostat housing, on my 89 NA6, has coroded through and started leaking/spraying everywhere, so I know i'm going to have to replace the whole lower housing, and I think I might as well replace the upper housing, thermostat and a few hoses while I'm at it.
However, because the car is my daily driver, is it safe to slather JB weld or some other sealer on the crack as a temporary fix until I get the replacement parts. Also, how concerned should I be about the rust coloured water/coolant that has come out, Is this likely to be a much bigger issue than just a cracked T pipe?
