The 'T' pipe coming of the lower thermostat housing, on my 89 NA6, has coroded through and started leaking/spraying everywhere, so I know i'm going to have to replace the whole lower housing, and I think I might as well replace the upper housing,thermostat and a few hoses while I'm at it.
However, because the car is my daily driver, is it safe to slather JB weld or some other sealer on the crack as a temporary fix until I get the replacement parts. Also, how concerned should I be about the rust coloured water/coolant that has come out, Is this likely to be a much bigger issue than just a cracked T pipe?

A temp fix won't be great, but it will be better than no fix.

Are you certain the metal is the leaky part and not just the hoses?

I'd replace the hoses anyway, since they're cheap


Just wash it off throroughly then watch for where the leak starts.



Rusty water isn't great, it might mean that it's been run without coolant for a while. (ie: run on tapwater)

The rust wont hurt it, not in the short term.

JB weld will fix it for now just fine.

Good opportunity to do a reroute, might be a similar price in the end, especially if you are going to replace all those parts anyway.
