Another diff question thread

So I have done some broad diff research over the past couple of months and I keep getting conflicting opinions. Some say not to waste your time with a torsen and others say it was perfect. I own a 98 1.8L NB with an open diff and stock power. It is a 5 speed at the moment but soon to be 6. It is my daily and I do the occasional supersprints and regularity. I am also keen to get into some skid pan days. The choices are a bit overwhelming, Kaaz, Giken, Cusco 'RS' and 'MZ', Torsen type 1 and 2, ect. Im not to keen on buying a LSD that has come out of another car, looking for something that is either new or pretty close to. I will keep an eye on the for sale thread but it would helpful to know what im looking out for haha. What are my options?

Thanks guys!

Sounds like you don't quite know the differences of LSDs. Read into 1.5 way, 2 way, clutch pack and Torsen LSDs. Understanding how they work will really help you decide which one to choose

My advice would be to fit a torsen, 1 or 2 and run it a while. If you turn out to be fast enough for that to not be enough you will know in a year or 2.

The torsen will hold near enough all its original value also.

Save your dollars, you can get away with an open diff on the track, in fact it will teach you how to drive smoothly to get the most out of the car rather than just mash the loud pedal.

But Mama, that's where the fun is...

Yeah I see your point. However, theory is one thing but putting it into practise is another. I guess the better question was what are peoples experiences?

My thoughts exactly.

Check out Guran's thread, and see just how fast you can go with a stock car, and have some insane fun in the process. By the time you get down to his times, you will know what you want.

There are some aphorisms around that send a similar message - 'if you can't go fast on 90hp, you won't go fast with 190'.

On the other hand, if you have too much money, I will be happy to relieve you of some of that burden
