Hey guys, it seems that there is a small hole where my muffler is on my 93 mx5. It is annoying because it sounds really bad especially when im going uphill. So i want to replace it with a new muffler but im scared what its going to sound like? I apologise in advance for this really noob question.

On NA's the muffler doesn't unbolt from the midpipe, its all one unit, so your old one will have to be cut off.
If you just want to replace the muffler, and not the whole system, take your car to an exhaust shop and ask them to weld in a new one with very similar dimensions. It will sound different because the stock muffler is mild steel and baffled, where as any after market one is probably going to be stainless steel and straight through. As long as its a similar size it shouldn't be too loud/different.

if hole itself isnt to large why not ask them to just weld it up? Then you wont have to worry about it sounding different or being all that expensive.

If there is a hole in the muffler it is probable that its on the way out in more than one spot. Getting a different unit will require some mods but exhaust places can do that quite readily. If you looking for a bit more performance and a better sound go with a proven system e.g. Town and Country Geelong. A good time for replacement is when something fails. If you just put a smaller muffler on it there is no real guarantee what it will sound like. If you like the sound of a standard NA just replace with alternate unit.

Hey thanks for replying. I got the car up on a hoist at my mates workshop, it seems like there is more than 1 hole. The firsy hole is probably like size of a 10 cent coin piece but the second hole is actually sort of hidden at the back of the muffler and that one is actually larger and i dont think they will want to weld it on for me. I was thinking of getting like a lukey muffler or something.

Just take it to the exhaust shop of your choice and have a natter about it. A Lukey muffler is just a brand now- the original went to God a very long time ago. You will get a price and feedback by the workshop. I would not get hung up about brands.
