Gearbox Bracket Near Header

Postby zephyrus17 » Wed Jan 16, 2013 9:22 pm

I installed my new header and noticed there's a bracket that connects to 2 gearbox bolts, and there's a bolt at the end. The bolt has it's head sheared off, and I assume it used to secure the downpipe to the gearbox? The bolt is scarily near to the header and I want to remove the whole bracket. I'm just wondering, would there be any danger by just taking out those 2 bolts and should I support the gearbox with a jack first? Also, after removing the bracket, would I need to replace the missing distance with washers or can the bolts go all the way into the hole?

Pull the 2 bolts out, remove bracket and then refit the bolts.

No jack required just pull remove and refit bolts.

Easy.

Its very common.

No problem taking a couple of bolts in and out but that bracket is there for a good reason. Without it then most of the bending force caused by the swaying of the exhaust and movement of the motor will be taken at the top of the headers, where they join at the head flange. This ultimately becomes a point of fracture. It's no big deal for an exhaust shop to fab up and fit a new bracket there to match the new headers.
