Clutch pedal intermittant softness?

Hey all,
Had a weird one on the way home from work today. After driving for around 30 minutes in the extreme heat (around 38 degrees in Melbourne today), my clutch pedal suddenly went soft while at the traffic lights.
The clutch would still disengage properly and I could get into gear fine, but the pick up point was very close to the floor, rather than near the top of pedal travel like it normally is. The clutch had a lot of free play and was noticeably softer than usual.
After driving for a few minutes, it slowly hardened up and the pickup point returned to normal, eventually going completely back to normal. It behaved for the rest of the drive home.
Any ideas? I'm hoping it was just the high heat (so hot that I could barely lift the bonnet and bonnet rod!), but I fear it's more likely a master cylinder issue.
