Clunk in steering rack - NA8 - Powersteering.

Hey all,

'94 - NA8 with Powersteering.

So, for some time I have noticed a 'clunk' if I turn the steering wheel to full lock, such as when I reverse out of my garage. Doesn't make the sound at any other time. I thought that one of the front wheels/tyres might be hitting something. I finally got around to having a look.

No obvious sign of the wheel/tyre hitting anything. All the suspension bolts/nuts are tight, and no obvious movement where it shouldn't be...ie worn ball joints, or the like. The suspension bushes were replaced earlier this year, and the oem springs/dampers were replaced with Yellow Speed racing versions.

While I had the car on the stands I grabbed one of the front wheels and swung it side to side, ie steering the car by manually turning the wheel and not the steering wheel. I noticed that at a certain point when going from lock to lock there was a clunk, and a slight notchiness and then the wheel would continue to turn smoothly. It did this when going from lock to lock in both directions. So I'm thinking there may be something wrong with the steering rack? Any ideas of what I should look out for? I have a Enthusiats guide for my model and will have a read through that, but also wanted to ask the questions here was well.

TIA
J.

If it's only clunking at full lock are you sure it's not just the rack reaching the end of it's travel?

does it make the noise when the steering wheel it turned and teh car is on stands?

Check the alignment bolts, are they tight?
