Fuel Pump Noise?

Hi All,

Just joined the forums here - and just bought an MX-5 last week.

I bought a 2006 NC from a dealer in Sydney. When buying, I noticed a noise behind the passenger seat, even when the car was not in motion. It sounds like a somewhat high pitched whine - near where I would think the fuel pump is.

I pointed this out to the dealer, and they committed (in the purchase contract) to rectify it. They're now trying to tell me that it's normal - and I'm trying to get some advice here. Is fuel pump noise normal?

I'm 100% sure this isn't body/wind noise. I've checked it inside when not moving. It clearly sounds electrical/flow related. It is similar to the noise you hear behind the passenger seat when you switch the car to accessory mode - which sounds like the fuel pump spooling up. It stops in that case, but with the engine running, it is constant.

Any advice?

Thanks,
Cemil

It is not normal. Hold them to the contract - if they agreed at the time of signing that it needed to be rectified, then it still does and they have committed to fix it.

JBT,

Thanks - I'm guessing it's flow noise, but I will definitely hold them to it.

Hi Sailor,

Thanks for the feedback - it's tough to notice if there's ambient noise (top down especially), but at night, on a quiet street, it's definitely noticeable.
