Not sure if this is the right section to post, but ... what should it cost to replace the:

1) clutch; and/or

2) gearbox

on an original first gen NA.

Any recommendations for a good place to get this done well and cost effectively in Melbourne?

used gearboxes are around $350, extreme heavy duty clutch is $350ish, machining flywheel is 50, labour is anywhere between 350-600

a clutch- standard product with labour you will not get much change from $800. The easy way - is ask for a quote. Insofar as places to get it done in Melb- there are plenty that can do this work and where you live is a key factor. Standard answer is get it done somewhere convenient.

@Mr Morlock - I'd imagine some places might be better than others for this job. If I was to nominate a suburb, it would be Hawthorn but surrounding areas are fine too. The best would be a place that's experienced in this kind of job and will do it very well for the fairest/lowest price. Any recommendations? Thanks

350-600 is just the labour.

its just the range you'd expect to pay. you'd be pretty dumbass to change a gearbox without doing the clutch unless it was already new. with the gearbox off, the clutch is a piss easy job so labour for doing both should be the same.

yes but the options are ONLY the clutch -or- BOTH the clutch & gearbox. That's why they were split, ie. I was seeking cost indications for just the clutch and for both.

cost for labour is the same whether you do the clutch or clutch/gearbox.

Not quite sure if this is relevant, but why are you tossing up between just clutch or clutch and gearbox? You either need a new/better box or you don't?
As mentioned before, if you have the box out you'll be a fool not to do the clutch. If it wasn't a daily driver Iwould give it a crack myself. Once I have me workshop set up I would gladly lend a hand.

I'm not tossing up between the 2, it's whether both are required. If the gearbox is required & the clutch is gone, then yes, you'd do both at the same time ... BUT if the gearbox is fine, you only need do the clutch.

I still dont get it? Why would you consider chucking out a working gearbox when the clutch is gone?
Of course you would only change the clutch.
If you are talking labour cost, my guess is there isnt much of a saving if you just do the clutch as the work involved is similar and it would come down to maybe and extra 30 min to change the gerabox while your in there....

changing a gearbox only or changing a clutch only is pretty much the exact same job.

yes, ditto, that's the view expressed above.
I can only guess that the misunderstanding might be premised on you thinking that the original question was about saving money or only about labour when it was actually just a straight question. ie. what is the cost of replacing the clutch or both (not knowing whether either or both are gone) ... and that Q was pretty much already answered by 11/10.
