Cam timing marks - SP 323 Backing plate

Hi guys,

I'm using a square style valve cover off the SP 323 beacuse i like the look and it gives easier access to the cam gears. I was intending on running the the 323 upper guard for mr plod / keeping sh*t away from the timing belt. However i've been looking at them, and they use differnt cam timing marks on the backing plate.

Basicly the timing marks are set to be straight up to line up with a mark on the backing plate rather then the standard MX5 setup where they point towards each other.

Looking at the photo it would seem allignment would be the same as if using the mx5 method, but can anyone confirm?

its the same engine. so all that stuff is the same. the BP in a BG was the original way of doing it. it was changed for the NA8 and BA when the backing plate didn't come over the cam wheels, hence why you use the incorrect timing marks from 94 onwards.

you leaving that engine mount attached to the front of the engine?

found the difference between the BG Astina and NA8 MX5 water pump yet?

Photo was just an example of the cam backing plate. The engine itself is still the original mx5 one, just with the early cam cover.

So if I time time the cams as per the vertical marks I should be okay?

Figured you would reply being an 323 man as well.

The cams have 2 marks on them, they have a set that point together and down a little, and the other set point straight up.

When you cut the front of an na6 cam cover there are vertical marks on it too (who'd have thought?).
