Does the SE muffler really restrict that much? I would have thought the main benefit would be in the downpipe & midpipe.

miataturbo guys seem to recommend 3" exhaust with 3" magnaflow.

The muffler is the only really restrictive part apart from the exhaust housing.

Peters car here has a stock SE midpipe, with a much better turbo/downpipe, and the diff back has the muffler removed.

It sounds fantastic and is perfect goal a goal under 200whp, however going 3" will give you a much more responsive, quicker spooling setup, that wont feel like it lags then comes onto boost hard.

Jojo's setup has a 3" V band exhaust straight off the back of the turbo and makes boost at 2000rpm.

I've got MX-5 Mania's Stainless Steel 2.5 inch setup on mine.
Is pretty quiet and gave roughly 20kw at the wheels extra.
Looking at the original piping that came out, I would say change the whole thing.
Has been in the car for 20000km's with lots of track days, with no issues, still all in tact. It would be a bity over 3 years old now.

Picking 2.5inch or 3inch will also depend on what other mods you have or plan to do.
As I have no plan in changing intakes, computers etc, I went with 2.5 inch to match the rest of what I have.
The only real other mod I have is a bigger intercooler.

People giving advice here dont understand exhausts, you pick 3" every time if starting from scratch.

Its not about power, its about spool.
When the car makes it power and how it feels when it does.
