Clickady Clack Train Track

Postby project.r.racing » Sat Aug 18, 2012 7:43 pm

I'm getting a noise that sound very similar to the noise trains make running over join in the train tracks.

the engine is a BP and mounted transalxe. The engine has done 170,000km.

It is intermittent and comes on for 5-10 seconds, then dissappears for 5-30 seconds at idle. Very hard to hear with the bonnet down, but bonnet up, it's load enough to know is come from the front of the engine near the timing gear.

Did the little screwdriver to the ear trick on what objects I could:-

alternator - nothing
ac compressor - faint
ps pump - faint
drivers engine mount - very clear to hear

Am I right in saying that my oil pump is on the way out?

first of all check the oil level if you havet already

sounds like it could be your engine on its way out.

Big end/crank bearing perhaps

Is the engine mount ok?
Could it be the rubber is torn and allowing the metal parts to hit each other.

A worn engine mount won't make a clickety noise, it just makes a dull thud when you let the clutch out (well, my Mondeo did when the rear mount died)

Well Dan,
Mine did before I replaced them.
I didn't think it was possible either but there you go.

it was loose then, or it was something else touching when the engine moved.

not engine mounts. someone had suggested that the idler/tensioner bearings make the same noise when fully crapping themselves out. just gotta dig under the timing cover and have a looksee.

make a clickady clack noise, or just a plactic rubbing noise?

it's a metallic noise, so anything plactic related really a close noise.

it's metal on metal.

My first thought was timing belt tensioner.

Crank sensor isn't coming loose and bouncing off the timing plate now and then?
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

The description sounds like valve train noise. Bearings? Tappets? Followers?

Hey OP,

I too have this clickady clack noise and i believe its coming from the tensor pully or something around that area.
Only happens to my car when its a really cold/ rainy night, it hasnt occured recently and not sure why.. but i think you should get your timing belt change soon :)
I know am.
