Coolant Disposal

Coolant is apparently noxious.

Does anyone know the correct way of disposing of engine coolant.

Waste depot takes it for free.
Same as motor oil.

^ Yeh that, alternatively a friendly mechanic will take it off you if you don't have a nearby tip.

I use sump oil for weed killer.
It works a treat and the weeds don't grow back.

Coolant would probably work too.

Coolant attracts animals and is rather toxic to them. Probably not the best for fencing. :p

Check your local council who will definitely be able to tell you. Not all tips will take these items and many also charge for disposing of oil. Same applies for paint- its often hard to find an organisation that will take it. Its a very nasty product and Pamex is quite right- its attractive and deadly to animals.

If you can bury it in the ground it would be fairly safe and non-toxic.

Ethylene glycol breaks down in air in about ten days, and in water or soil in a few weeks.

ethylene glycol the chemical in coolant is toxic and once ingested causes renal failur, it also has a sweet taste thats why animals like it so its probably smart to dispose of it.

I have heard of poor asain migrants adding a table spoon of pure ethylene glycol to a dish of milk and leaving it outside.

I believe some starving asians in the third world add crushed paracetamol tablets to cans of tuna for a similar effect.

It is a natural chemical and it does break down. Bury deeply and it eventually becomes harmless fairly quickly. I'm not suggesting that is the environmentally legal way to deal with it, but environmentally, it would be safe to dispose of it that way. If you are genuinely worried about the environment, then you wouldn't drive or use cars. Just giving it to some 3rd party to dispose of doesn't change how it ultimately impacts the environment.
