Will a timing light work with COPs?

I haven't started my BP motor yet and I'm halfway through making my COPs.

I will need to set the base timing on my motor and I'm curious to whether my timing light will be triggered by the COPs signal wire or will I need to install the NA6 coils?

I couldnt find my inductive(powered)timing light so I used a 30 year old unpowered timing light in series with the coil lying on top of the engine, you could use a short ignition lead,it worked ok as far as timing the ignition went.
I had everything secured temporarily with cable ties at first.but later I started the engine when eveything was unsecured (I still cant even remember why!)of course the inevitable happened, lead went down into fanbelt(I presume)ripped connector apart on coil,i'd say 12v got into signal wire because it killed its sister coil too.
good thing is,these are cheap to replace.
I had mine laying on a plastic plate on top of engine because at first, without it,it was throwing a spark out around the timing light leads.(it was a crappy timing light even when I first bought it)

ps.dont even think about putting your hand near these when powered.dont ask,you already know how I know!

I finished assembling my COP setup and dwell circuit last night, was midnight when i plugged it all in and test started it up. Had to keep the peace with the neighbours so literally started the car for 5 seconds, then switched it off. I'll continue testing tonight after work. I've been wanting to find out about timing lights on COPs too, and will test/verify with my induction timing light asap.

A good quality inductive timing light will pick up the trigger wire on your COP loom. Otherwise as has been said, the ignition wire trick works too.

Yep, checked it on mine tonight. If i have my timing light induction pickup on COP top1 or 4, and press the trigger, it works.

I need to buy a timing light, the digital ones seem pretty impressive. Any recommendations?

I have a Cornwell. It was expensive but is really good. A friend of mine bought a cheap eBay inductive light recently, and it is surprisingly good.
