Rough idle.. Shaking engine cured!

Postby vrmmmpshhh » Sun May 06, 2012 12:32 pm

Ever since I can remember the car would sometimes have a very slight erratic idle and the engine would shake enough that the gear knob would vibrate. Last night I removed the charcoal canister and it went away. Then i got carried away and did a mini tuck of the wires now the engine bay is much more pleasant to look at. The original problem wasn't major just annoying but now the car is awesome, with an intake clean and new plugs it should purr ready for the turbo.

For those who have similar issues I'd suggest looking at the canister it's a 5 min job and reversible.

So you blocked or removed the vacuum lines from the intake manifold? What specifically did you do to remove it, and why do you think it was causing the problem?

The nipple on the inlet manifold i capped with a rubber cap that is on the rear tail light inside the boot. The other 2 nipples under the canister i joined together with some hose. i unplugged the solenoid and left taped the plug off. i had no idea it would fix the problem i just did it to clean up the engine bay

so either the was a hole in the rubber piping or you had a cracked charcol cannister, and you solved the problem by blocking them both off.

you could've just replaced the rubber pipe and piped up a free cannister from a wreckers as there are 100,000s out there. mx5 626 323 30x etc canisters are all the same.

it is a band aid solution you have done. but the cannister is there for a reason.

at least you have good idle now. nothing worse than have air bleeding into the intake system after the afm. making the engine do woopy things. although, dependind on the mdel you have, isn't the cannister connected to the fuel system?

from what i understand the canister takes out the fuel vapours and returns them into the inlet manifold to be burnt. The only thing i have blocked is the nipple on the inlet manifold. the regular lines run as normal just without the vapours going through the cannister. I did not remove the canister to fix the idle problem, i removed it while i was cleaning up the wires in the engine bay and then read up on its job on the various forums and decided that i would leave it off. having a stable idle was just a bonus i thought id share.

It's normal to a point.

No need for concern unless it's vibrating madly.

Remember, the gearstick is directly in the gearbox, which is directly bolted to the engine.
When the engine vibrates, so does the gearbox.

So if the car is idling happily, there's no need to worry.

Thanks kansei
Yeah, not violent/visible...just vibrates. Good to know :)
Ive seen some built cars on best motoring with ridiculous gear knob vibration...
