Hey guys I'm new here and have had a few import mx5's , now I'm building one as a project. Just wondering as I want to build a 1.6 turbo motor for it, are these any good, I'm looking to make around 190rwkw mark, just wondering if anyone has used a good setup that works well ?? I will be using a forged piston kit , tomeii cams and solid lifters, will these engines need a baffled sump ?? Or anything I should know about ??

Ohhh almost forgot do 1.8 exhaust manifold bolt to 1.6??

No, 1.6 and 1.8 exhausts can't be swapped. the 1.8 is longer than the 1.6 so the ports are different spacing.

can't help with turbo/engine build, but wait for one of the more knowledgable guys to reply (Nitrodann, Wozzah1975, etc)

Not exactly the same build, but alot of what is written here applies.

In my opinion Tomei Cams are over priced, and also in alot of cases you don't need to go to mechanical grinds. Have a read of this thread for why

There are also other threads on this forums regarding what you want to do.

In a nut shell parts you need
-good pistons and rods, plenty available cheap at the moment, $8-900 for an Eagle rod and forged piston set
-Good head work and matched cams for the best power curve. I would suggest a ported head with o/size valves, and cams around 220-230@50, .370-380"ish lift
-decent exhaust manifold and turbo, nothing over the top but something that suits your power requirement
-I haven't had a good look at a std 1.6 sump, but if it's anything like the standard 1.8 sump it should be fine

Cool thanks heaps ,yea wasn't too sure about the baffles, but I hav had a lot to do with nissans engines and they're a must have in high power rb's , I will have to read them links shortly, also I have dealt with spool imports before and they don't seem to have a forged kit for the 1.6 only the 1.8

They are the same rod, I can supply Spools if you require $420 set plus postage.

At the moment though i would be looking at something like this as a package

Have a shop around in AUS, there are people supplying these packages over here for around the same price. I try and support local wherever possible, but at the moment its a tough game.

Yea I was wondering about pistons because I used cp pistons in my 20 valve turbo engine and they were very noisey, what are the weisco pistons like?

If you had piston noise with CP's I'd be very surprised if the pistons were at fault...., more likely to be another issue.
It's normal for a forgey to be a little noisey when cold, but other than that there should be no issue
Wiseco's are fine also, but if I had preference I would probably choose CP's over them. There is around $100 difference in price, the CP's are a little more expensive.

There wansnt a problem it we just the the forged knock was louder then other forged pistons, also would u know of a turbo kit , other wise I was thinking of using familia or tx3 setup

A standard tx3/familiar set up wont see those power figures. I would be having a look at a good tube type exhaust manifold, and a good ball bearing type Garrett turbo.

There are others on this forum more switched on about Turbo kits and sizing etc than I am, so i'll wait for them to step in regarding that.

yea i was looking at some tube manifolds on the net but i dont really like them too much, also as im starting from scratch with a na motor i am trying to find a kit which may include all the bits i need lol(would be easier, but doubt it will happen)

Familia turbo sits right where the engine mount is I think... it hits something pretty major anyway, not really worth the effort. I remember seeing the setup when sabretooth had a Familia engine sitting at his place.

190kw is about 250 horses, that is going to be pretty epic in an MX-5. I'm not too knowledgable as far as turbo sizing but based on other builds I have seen you would need something like a 2871 with a .63 housing, might be a bit laggy on a 1600. Maybe go for less peak power and use a 2560?

Because these cars are so light and can carry awesome corner speeds you don't really need crazy high power!

yea im really not to sure about these mazda 1.6's as im a corolla nut and had a 20v turbo engine , only with forged internals and metal head gasket with 2515 hks turbo at 16psi and was making 220rwkw, so im unsure of these motors

So what are you after?

An all encompassing kit with everything ready to bolt on and make 180rwkw? Do you need management included or can you organize that with your tuner?

I can do management myself but what is most used/ recommended for them, as I have a microtech just floating in the shed lol
