Easy way to remove camshaft caps on a BP?

Hi all,

What is a good way to remove the camshaft caps on a BP?

Today I had a play on my old spare engine, and they don't come off my hand, nor as the workshop manual suggest a way to do it. I heavily tapping it and using screwdrivers works, but that may make pieces of metal fly.

When I switch the camshafts in the motor actually in the car, I don't want metal flying around.

Thanks.

p.s. Yes I have unscrewed the bolts.

A very light tap either side of the cap, evenly, with a soft blow (plastic capped) hammer whilst levering up lightly on the cam with a screwdriver. Be very careful

I find that lifting the cam cap bolts 80% of the way out of the holes, and using their leverage to crack the cam cap works too.

Obviously be sensible.
